Defender lost his temper over a destroyed moon (I was destroying his moons to catch the fleets and failed). The next day, he got up the nerve to launch at me. Even though I thought that he would be feeling the pressure to counter with a larger fleet.
Indeed not, it turned out that the best way to crash the attacker was to give him sth to hunt. The best way to give him sth to hunt was to motivate him to hunt (bil. resources on the moon).
After his first attack failed, I could draw out his full fleet for the plan I had in place. I controlled my activity and it worked out.
